Why Volunteers Matter

Volunteers are an essential part of our daily work. Without them, FoodChain simply could not operate. Our volunteers:

  • Deliver meals across Lexington
  • Grow produce on our Aquaponics Farm
  • Prepare meals and snacks in the kitchen
  • Hand out meals in the evenings
  • Help teach our community classes
  • Organize produce rescued from Trader Joe’s
  • Represent FoodChain at outreach events

Most importantly, our volunteers further our mission by giving back to their communities.

Everything You Need to Know

What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable that you can move in and won’t mind getting dirty. In compliance with food safety regulations, we require closed-toed shoes and hair tied up.
What are the age requirements?
Children of all ages are welcome to volunteer when accompanied by a guardian or adult. Children 14 and over may volunteer alone after a parent or guardian completes a volunteer waiver. For Mobile Meal Delivery, the driver must be over 18, but children of any age are welcome to ride along.
What do I bring?
Just a good attitude! Come ready to learn. You’re welcome to bring a water bottle (we also have free water on hand), and we have lockers where you can securely store your keys or wallet.
Where do I park?
You can park in West Sixth Brewery’s parking lot, or anywhere there is street parking.
Volunteer Sign-Up Policy

To give more people the opportunity to participate and to create a greater variety of volunteers, volunteer sign-ups are limited to one volunteer shift per person per week.

Exceptions may be made for individuals who are completing required volunteer hours for school or other preapproved reasons. Additional exceptions may also be granted at the discretion of FoodChain when needed.

Volunteer Safety Policy
FoodChain serves vulnerable populations including seniors, youth, and families. Volunteers are required to disclose in advance if there are any circumstances that would make them unable to work with these populations. FoodChain reserves the right to request a background check, and a full background check is required for any volunteer working with our education programs in schools, child care centers, and summer youth programs.
I need service-hour verification, what do I do?
If you are volunteering to complete required service hours, please email volunteer@foodchainlex.org before signing up to ensure program alignment.
